Last July I filmed a topwater smallmouth bass show with Bob Izumi on Lake Erie. It will be airing January 31 at 830 am on Global and Feb 2 on WFN. It will rerun on WFN and Global the rest of the season.
It was a blast spending the full day with Bob and his family, wife Sandy and son Darren. Its a family run outfit, Darren does the camera work and editing, wife Sandy does the photography and underwater camera work.
We started the day early to try to beat the wind but it was pretty breezy right off the hop. It didn’t seem to matter though, the fish were still co operating. A slight breeze is actually better as the fish are less spooky and more aggressive. We caught a ton of fish with a 4.5 being the biggest. The hardest part was trying to get Bob to stop fishing for every fish he saw cruising. We normally go over a bunch of fish but in order to get the explosive topwater bites we tend to keep moving and casting way ahead of the boat. Every time Bob saw a cruising fish he had to try and catch it. We were throwing Sebile ghost walkers.
I hadn’t used them before but I was very impressed with them. They had some weight to them so they cast very well. They seem to stick to the water, a lot of my clients tend to pull the walking type baits to hard pulling them out of the water instead of having them glide back and forth. The shape of this baits makes it very difficult for that to happen. They are one of the best walk the dog style baits made.
This was my second show with Bob. We filmed a trout show on the lower river last year. He is so easy to work with, no pressure and truly just loves to fish above all else. Hope you enjoy the show.
